At ACC, we believe that women in science are a force for change. We have plenty of women scientists in a wide variety of applications and professions, from biotechnology and nanotechnology to chemistry, environmental engineering and computer physics. As the world hurtles towards a future threatened by climate change, and as we celebrate International Day of Women in Science, we want to recognize them and promote their achievements. 

One of these amazing women is Laura SINGH, Applied Research Team Leader at ACC... 

 

Laura, can you introduce yourself and describe your background?

I grew up in London, and did my studies in Materials Science at Cambridge. After my post doc, I decided that I wanted to work in industry and contribute to improving our environment. I combined this with a change of country too, so started working at Saint- Gobain in Paris.
 

Did you dream of becoming a scientist as a child?

From an early age I was fascinated by how things worked, and loved taking apart radios and the TV, which infuriated my dad. By the age of 11, I had my heart set on doing research in Physics and more particularly Particle Physics after an inspiring internship at UCL on a particle detector for CERN.
 

What are you working on at the moment? What does your job at ACC involve?

I’m in the Applied Research team working on the process part of all solid state batteries. The scale up of this technology is very challenging and will keep us busy over the next couple of years.

 

What challenges have you faced as a woman scientist?

Fortunately not too many challenges, but as a female we always have to put in a little more effort to make sure our opinion is correctly heard.
 

What advice would you give to a young girl wondering about these careers?

To always follow what you enjoy, and to do several internships to be sure that the future job meets your expectations. Work life is very different to our academic studies, so we must be fully aware of the differences in order to get the most out of our professional life
