What is the environmental impact of battery production throughout its lifecycle? [Infographics]

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF BATTERY PRODUCTION THROUGHOUT ITS LIFECYCLE

Lithium batteries are present in most of the products we love to consume all over the world: mobile phones, electronic devices, electric cars...  Unfortunately, the production of these batteries is responsible for a number of environmental impacts.

Which ones and what are the consequences? Let us explain…

From extraction of raw materials to battery recycling, a production that takes a heavy toll on planet resources.

The production of an EV battery requires a lot of resources and energy, so the question arises about the sustainability and preservation of resources, and the impact of mining and industrial processing. Mining and refining consume a lot of energy and water. The various production phases, from the mine, can also lead to pollution due to unwanted discharges into the soil, water and air.

Recycling is another fundamental issue. Current processes are energy and resource intensive, with complex chemical processes at their core.

Taking action on several levels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

At ACC, we are working to reduce these impacts throughout the life cycle of our products: from raw materials to recycling.
We pay particular attention to the eco-design of our products, manufacturing processes and factories with regard to the choice of materials, the elimination of certain chemicals, the continuous reduction of energy consumption, and the improvement of recyclability. We also work with our suppliers on these issues, who must respect precise environmental requirements: more than 70% of the environmental footprint of our products come from our supply chain.

In the next articles, we’ll go deeper into the calculation of our carbon footprint for our battery production (not an easy task!) and we’ll tell you more about these levers we are activating to reduce it!
